We may frown upon the mistresses of this world, but according to the latest survey, single women are keener on pursuing a chap who is off-limits.

Apparently undeterred by the thought of an existing girlfriend or wife, the single girls were prepared to indulge in a spot of 'mate-poaching' in their search for Mister Right.

The study of 184 heterosexual students was conducted at Oklahoma State University by Melissa Burkley and Jessica Parker. They told the volunteers that a computer programme would match them with their ideal partner and the results were surprising.

While 59% of single women were interested in pursuing a relationship with a single guy, an astonishing 90% were ready to chase an attached man.

Burkley and Parker suggest that the reason could be what is known as 'pre-screening', where women are drawn to those who have already been 'tested' as a satisfactory mate.

Other theories could be the competitive streak, where stealing a mate gives the self-esteem a boost.

But Burkley is keen to explore the motives further. She told Marie Claire: "The next question is why."

We wait with bated breath.
